• Rich Natural Textures: The fit-out relies heavily on deep-toned polished hardwood flooring, textured stone cladding around central pillars and fireplaces, and exposed wooden ceiling beams that lend an expansive, grounded feel.

• Balanced Color Palette: Deep royal blue accent walls anchor key breakout zones and boardrooms, contrasting beautifully with cognac leather armchairs, neutral rugs, and brass lighting fixtures.

  Open-Plan Workflows & Natural Light: High clerestory windows and wide folding glass doors seamlessly connect formal boardroom spaces with outdoor patio views and light-filled open workspaces.

Technical Approach:

To capture the full depth of these multi-level spaces—from the stone-clad reception desk to the raised executive kitchen and boardroom—keeping vertical lines perfectly plumb was essential. Careful exposure management allowed us to highlight the warm ambient lighting from the custom chandeliers without blowing out the natural daylight pouring through the glass facades.

When photographing commercial interiors, the challenge is always translating a three-dimensional space into a clear, compelling visual story. A recent architectural shoot highlighted a corporate interior design project for Spacework Zimbabwe where natural light, rich textures, and bold structural lines work in total harmony.

Key Design Elements Captured:

• Linear Ceiling Features & Custom Lighting: Recessed LED strip lighting set into slatted timber panels guides the eye naturally through reception corridors into primary meeting areas.

• Textured Material Palette: Deep royal blue accent walls paired against warm gold-leaf finishes and warm leather lounge seating create an inviting yet sophisticated tone.

• Glass Partitioning & Spatial Flow: Floor-to-ceiling glass frames create distinct functional spaces—such as private offices and boardrooms—without sacrificing natural light transfer.

Technical Execution:

To accurately represent the designer's vision, perspective control was vital to maintain vertical alignment along glass divisions and wall columns. Incorporating subtle motion blurs of people walking through corridors added life and human scale to the environment while keeping the primary focus strictly on the craftsmanship of the fit-out.

In a recent architectural shoot for Bruce Rowlands Architect, I had the pleasure of documenting a space that perfectly balances industrial precision with warm, organic elements. This project stands out not just for its structural design, but for the way it integrates the surrounding landscape into the everyday workspace.

Bringing the Outdoors In

One of the most striking features of this property is the seamless transition between the interior and the lush gardens. The large, floor-to-ceiling folding glass doors allow the office to breathe, blurring the lines between the sleek, modern boardroom and the textured, brick-lined courtyard.

As a photographer, capturing the "greenery-to-wood" ratio was a priority. Whether it’s the view of the mature trees from the boardroom table or the way the natural light hits the light-oak vaulted ceilings, the environment feels alive.

The Beauty is in the Details

What makes architectural photography so rewarding is finding those moments where different materials meet. This project is a masterclass in texture:

• The Feature Wall: A mosaic of wooden blocks behind the digital display adds depth and a tactile warmth to the high-tech meeting space.

• The Flooring: The transition from cool grey tiles to a rich, warm walnut herringbone floor defines the different "zones" of the office without the need for walls.

• Industrial Accents: Matte black beams and minimalist lighting fixtures provide a sharp, clean contrast to the natural wood finishes.

An Aerial Perspective

Taking to the air with the drone allowed us to see the true scale and layout of the complex. From above, the geometric precision of the dark metal roofing and the solar arrays contrasts beautifully with the circular brickwork and winding gravel paths of the garden. The top-down view reveals a thoughtfully planned ecosystem where sustainability meets high-end professional design.

Final Thoughts

Architecture is about more than just buildings; it’s about how we feel inside them. This space manages to feel expansive and professional, yet grounded and cozy. It was a privilege to capture the harmony between the sharp lines of modern architecture and the soft, wild beauty of the landscape.

There is a specific challenge in architectural photography: capturing not just the dimensions of a room, but the feeling of the space. In a recent project, that feeling was one of total immersion.

This residence is a striking example of how modern architecture can retreat into the landscape rather than dominate it. From the moment I stepped onto the property, it was clear that the design was dictated by the trees and the topography of the valley beyond.

The Interior: Textural Harmony

Inside, the palette is intentionally restrained to let the outside world do the talking. I was particularly drawn to the juxtaposition of materials:

• Polished Concrete & Warm Timber: The coolness of the floors provides a clean slate for the rich, honey-toned wooden ceilings and furniture.

• The Stone Feature Wall: A rugged, tactile element that brings the earthiness of the exterior right into the living heart of the home.

• Light as a Material: With floor-to-ceiling glass in almost every room, the light isn’t just an ambient factor; it’s a dynamic element that changes the "paint" on the walls from hour to hour.

The "Hero" Moments

One of the most photogenic aspects of this shoot was the integration of the existing flora. Rather than clearing the site, the architects built around the trees. Seeing a trunk rising through a perfectly finished white terrace or a wooden deck is a powerful reminder of our connection to the environment.

Then, there is that view. Framing a shot with the iconic Eames-style lounger against a panoramic window overlooking the lush Zimbabwean greenery felt like capturing a definitive moment of "calm." It represents the pinnacle of what a home should be: a sanctuary.

Final Thoughts

As a photographer, I’m often looking for lines and symmetry. Here, I found something better—a conversation between the man-made and the wild. It was an absolute privilege to document this project and see how thoughtful design can create a seamless transition between a bedroom and the forest canopy.

Hornbill Lodge is perched high on one of Kariba's imposing lakeshore hills and so must have one of the best views of the lake in Kariba. Recently I was asked by the food maestros at the 3 Monkeys restaurant in Harare to photograph a selection of their dishes for their online marketing channels. I always say the only difficult issue with photographing food is constantly wanting to tuck in to it! Needless to say I think I managed to restrain myself long enough to capture some decent images.

I had an awesome time recently collaborating with The Marketing House shooting lifestyle images in the studio for their wholesale food client Winner Foods. The brief was to showcase Winner foods' large basket of goods being used in a real setting from the preparation and cooking to eating the final meal. Architecture is definitely one of my favourite photographic genres and so when I was commissioned by Office Design to photograph their amazing new multi-purpose office space for Old Mutual Zimbabwe I was naturally thrilled. The concept of the shared working space is not new to the corporate world, but it is new to Harare and the team behind the design and implementation of the project have certainly created a world standard product.
