When photographing commercial interiors, the challenge is always translating a three-dimensional space into a clear, compelling visual story. A recent architectural shoot highlighted a corporate interior design project for Spacework Zimbabwe where natural light, rich textures, and bold structural lines work in total harmony.

Key Design Elements Captured:

• Linear Ceiling Features & Custom Lighting: Recessed LED strip lighting set into slatted timber panels guides the eye naturally through reception corridors into primary meeting areas.

• Textured Material Palette: Deep royal blue accent walls paired against warm gold-leaf finishes and warm leather lounge seating create an inviting yet sophisticated tone.

• Glass Partitioning & Spatial Flow: Floor-to-ceiling glass frames create distinct functional spaces—such as private offices and boardrooms—without sacrificing natural light transfer.

Technical Execution:

To accurately represent the designer's vision, perspective control was vital to maintain vertical alignment along glass divisions and wall columns. Incorporating subtle motion blurs of people walking through corridors added life and human scale to the environment while keeping the primary focus strictly on the craftsmanship of the fit-out.

Documenting a Creative Sanctuary: The Brutalist Studio of Portia Zvavahera

Architectural photography is at its most rewarding when the building itself tells a profound story. Recently, I had the privilege of documenting a truly exceptional structure—a custom-designed, purpose-built art studio for the internationally renowned Zimbabwean artist Portia Zvavahera.

Designed by the Mauritius-based architectural firm Casarch, this building is a masterclass in modern, raw minimalism. It stands as a monolithic, off-shutter concrete sanctuary tucked beautifully into the surrounding natural landscape.

As a photographer, my objective was to translate the raw texture, immense scale, and deliberate geometry of this creative space into a timeless visual portfolio.

The Power of Raw Material and Geometry

The first thing that strikes you about the studio is its uncompromising use of off-shutter concrete. It’s a bold, Brutalist aesthetic that requires a careful photographic eye; without the right light, large concrete surfaces can easily look flat or imposing in a frame.

To bring the facade to life, I focused on the rhythmic, deeply recessed geometric window wells lining the upper level. By capturing the building when the sun hits at a precise angle, the sharp shadows emphasize the depth and clean architectural lines of the structure, transforming a massive concrete block into a dynamic interplay of light and form.

Softening the Edge: The Indoor-Outdoor Flow

While the concrete provides a strong, industrial frame, the architecture brilliantly softens these edges through its connection to the environment. The ground level features expansive, floor-to-ceiling timber glass doors that open up entirely onto a wide wooden deck.

Photographing this perspective required balancing the crisp, bright blue Zimbabwean sky and the vivid green lawns with the rich, warm wooden tones of the frames and patio furniture. The contrast between the cool, textured concrete above and the warm timber below perfectly showcases how the studio balances industrial strength with an inviting, light-filled atmosphere conducive to creation.

Preserving Architectural Intent

Every line, angle, and material in a luxury build like this is intentional. From the way the building mirrors the linear canopy of the surrounding trees to the pristine, minimalist lines of the decking, my goal is always to deliver a polished asset library that reflects the exact vision of the architects and the personality of the space.

Behind the Lens: Capturing the Art of Modern Luxury Interior Design

When it comes to architectural and interior photography, the camera has a specific job: it must translate a physical, three-dimensional experience onto a two-dimensional screen. It isn’t just about documenting furniture or walls; it is about capturing the flow of a room, the subtle interplay of light and shadow, and the incredible textures that make a space feel like home.

I recently had the absolute pleasure of photographing a spectacular new residential project in Harare for the brilliant Leigh Howson Interior Design. From the moment I stepped through the doors, it was clear that this build was a masterclass in modern, high-end design.

As a photographer, my goal was to ensure that every frame did absolute justice to the design team's meticulous attention to detail.

Balancing Light, Texture, and Scale

One of the most exciting challenges of architectural photography is managing contrast—specifically, balancing the warm, ambient indoor lighting with the bright natural light pouring in from the outside environment.

In the open-plan living and dining areas, bold geometric timber ceiling structures and statement pendant lights create a distinct mood. By utilizing natural light to fill the space, I was able to maintain the rich, authentic tones of the wooden beams while keeping the expansive textured lounge area feeling bright, inviting, and true to scale.

Moving through the property, the design seamlessly shifts from grand communal areas to beautifully curated private sanctuaries. The kitchen stands out as a triumph of high-contrast minimalism, pairing deep, sleek cabinetry with dramatic, heavily veined marble features. In the master suite and the bathrooms, fluted textures and plush, earthy velvet finishes create a deeply layered, spa-like experience.

Even the children's spaces were given incredible thought, combining vibrant, custom wall illustrations with clean, functional modern lines.

The Final Flow: Indoor-Outdoor Living

The ultimate climax of this architectural story is the property's transition to the outdoors. Huge glass panels open up from the upper and lower living areas, leading straight onto a stunning pool deck. Photographing this angle required waiting for the perfect ambient light to highlight how the interior’s organic timber and stone materials mimic and blend into the lush greenery surrounding the home.

Documenting a project of this caliber is a reminder of why I love architectural photography. It is an incredible process to collaborate with local designers, craftsmen, and builders, taking their hard work and freezing it into a polished, timeless portfolio.

Luxury in the heart of Vic Falls...

Earlier this year, my long-time Victoria Falls partners at Wild Horizons trusted me to capture their brand new, elegant lodge: Waterfalls.

Situated right in the heart of the city and within sight of the mighty spray of the Falls, this property was an absolute pleasure to photograph from every angle. It truly captures luxury travel in Zimbabwe.

I was asked to cover all aspects of the lodge, from the fabulously plush gardens to sumptuously comfortable rooms and public spaces, delicious food and warm, friendly staff.

Modern architecture with APS...

I have been working with Harare’s Architectural Planning Services for many many years now and I am always excited to get a call from them when a newly completed project is ready to be photographed. This was no exception when I got the call a few moths ago to photograph a newly completed private residence in one of Harares’ more hilly areas. Perched on the top of a rise with stunning views into the surrounding Msasa tress and valleys this modern take on a tuscan style home takes full advantage of the stunning views that surround it. Products for TV Sales and Home...

Working with TV Sales and Home over the years has meant that I have photographed anything from small kettles to large dining room and lounge suites, and everything in between! Check out a small selection of some of the results below! I work with the TVSH team and photograph the products in their on-site studio at their main distribution factory. I then deep-etch all images (remove them from the background) and hand them over to the design geniuses at Out to Africa media who then work their design magic!

Chop chop...

I have been dealing with rumbling tummies again, this time on a delicious food shoot for Chop Chop restaurant. I love food photography shoots, and this one was no different! A constant stream of visually and olfactory pleasing dishes came streaming out of the Chop chop kitchen on the day and we managed to capture a variety of engaging and enticing images. The brief not only called for great images of the food but also images of people actually enjoying the food, its definitely delicious and it was that look and expression we wanted to capture and convey to the audience. Upping the Voltz with Rank stationary...

Late last year I had the opportunity to work with zim dance hall legend Voltz JT on a campaign with The Marketing House for Rank Zimbabwe. The brief was to shoot a variety of lifestyle and school related images of Voltz JT using Rank Zimbabwe’s exercise and counter books. Have you seen or used the resulting exercise books at all? Panoramic views at Hornbill Lodge...

Earlier this year I was in Kariba for a #hospitality shoot with Hornbill Lodge of their recent room renovations. Hornbill Lodge is perched high on one of Kariba's imposing lakeshore hills and so must have one of the best views of the lake in Kariba. Wouldn't you like to wake up in the morning to that sunrise view?
